About Gynaecomastia Surgery
The great news is that enlarged male breasts can be effectively treated through modern advances in plastic surgery. You no longer have to live in shame or embarrassment. The surgical options for gynecomastia depend on what is causing the problem. The three components are 1) excess fat, 2) excess breast tissue, and 3) excess skin.
Surgical reduction of gynecomastia can be done either by excision or by liposuction.
Surgical excision is preferred if the enlargement is due to hard, glandular tissue that cannot be otherwise removed by liposuction. The incision is usually placed at the edge of the areola.
If the enlargement is predominantly due to soft, fatty tissue, reduction can be done by liposuction or Vaser liposelection. Small incisions are placed inconspicuously near the armpits or at the side of the chest.
If there is excess skin that needs to be removed, a longer incision extending into the lower chest may be required.
Gynecomastia surgery is usually done under general anesthesia, and takes from 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the type and severity of the condition. Breast tissue and/or fat tissues are removed during the procedure. Patients are discharged on the same day, and most patients are able to resume work within 1 to 2 days. Following the procedure, the patient is required to wear a pressure garment (a tight fitting shirt to help control swelling and maintain the contour of the chest) for approximately one month.

1. What causes gynaecomastia?
There are several causes of gynaecomastia resulting in overdeveloped male breasts. When the body produces too much estrogen or too little testosterone, the glandular tissue of the breast swells. Genetics, steroids and drugs are the most common causes. Gynaecomastia does not discriminate by age and occurs in babies, teen boys, and older men.

2. Why doesn’t exercise or diet help with
gynaecomastia?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to get rid of gynaecomastia with exercise because majority of the time, the problem is excess glandular tissue and that cannot be resolved with exercise or healthy eating.

3. Are the results of gynaecomastia surgery
permanent?
The surgery usually produces great results, and the male breasts seldom recur. Only a small percentage of male patients have seen a recurrence. This may be due to factors such as excessive weight gain, and certain types of medication such as anabolic steroids.

4. Am I a good candidate?
It is actually easier to determine if you are a good male breast reduction (gynaecomastia) candidate, than it is to determine the exact cause of it. The ideal male breast reduction candidate can quite simply be any man who feels self-conscious about his enlarged breasts. If the problem is treated by an experienced surgeon in gynaecomastia, it can be effectively and safely improved and permanently corrected.
